Hip replacement failure - beautiful lab - 13-05-2012 06:46 AM

Hello
I would like someone to respond if they have gone through the same or similar to my lovely boy. Just briefly he had a hip replacement op beginning of April which dislocated, second op again dislocated, third op full FHO surgery.....success! or so we thought, he has now and god knows how fractured the femur bone which was drilled to home the replacement device. Our own vet seems to think that with strict rest the bone will heal but he isn't ruling out that our ortho vet will want to operate to plate and pin it. We have done everything to care for him and have been very strict with him, followed the vets advice to the end but we just can't seem to get back on the right road. We have caged him but he goes mental so the vet advised not to as he could do more damage than good. He's 9 years old and other than hip problems is a very healthy boy and a very much loved and adored boy. Any advice or similar experience would be much appreciated.

Maybe instead of crating him...could you set up an ex-pen somewhere in your house and let him rest in there?

That way he at least has a bit more room to move around in. You could set up a bed for him there along with toys to keep him busy so he doesn't get bored from not being able to properly exercise while his injury heals.

Best of luck with his recovery!

Morning, just an update on my boy what a nightmare this has been, more for our boy than us though. He had the operation last Monday to plate, pin and wire the femur, vet said it was tricky but successful. A good friend of mine works for the RSPCA they have lent us a cage, we honestly didn't think he would settle in one but decided to try it.....success.....he seems relaxed, sleeping well and eating well and he's safe. He's only allowed 5 minute "duty" walks in the garden 3/4 times a day, ice pack 4 times a day as the leg was very swollen but pleased to say the swelling has gone down a lot now, he's not walking on the leg brilliant but as he also had the FHO surgery only 3 weeks ago its not surprising. He's alert and we've put the cage at the window so he can see the outside world go by! I feel so bad what we have put him through but no one could foresee all this happening. I am crossing fingers, toes everything in hope we have success this time. We love this boy so much he's our life, I keep reminding him when he's better we'll take him to the seaside and he can run and swim as much as he wants. He goes back to the vets this Friday to have the clips removed and a check over......I'll say one thing for my boy he has a very strong character!
