New to forum and really need some advice - julesmurray - 21-04-2012 01:02 PM

Hi
I'm Julie and i'm Mum to an 11 year old male lab named Sandy. I didn't even know there was a forum and now i have found you it's sadly near the end of Sandy's lifeSad
I could really do with so advice though please
Sandy has just been diagnosed with Ca Prostate that has infiltrated his bladder and urethra and propably his pelvis. His liver is also showing signs of abnormality.
This diagnosis was a bit of a shock as they were suspecting Cushings and Pancreatitis!
Because the cancer is so advanced the only treatment is palliative and the vet (who is wonderful) has put him on Metacam once per day.
He had a loading dose on Thursday evening as per vet instructions but now i dont know whether it is best to give it evening or morning?
Sorry to join you and then be full of questions - wish i'd found you soonerSad

Welcome to the forum!

I am so sorry you have received such shocking news regarding Sandy's health. I personally have no experience with cancer although I am sure some members here will have some wise words for you.

If you are unsure on how to medicate Sandy perhaps give the vet surgery a ring and they will be able to go over it with you. What time daily do you usually give the metacam?

I didn't want to read and run so I am sorry I couldn't give you any answers.

Sammie x

From what I have read, only a single dosage is required. Like Sammie suggested though, I would definitely give your vet a call and just check to be sure Smile

Thanks everyone. I know he only needs a single dose per day, it's more a case of trying to work out the best time of day to give it. Because the loading dose was given in the evening, i had carried on giving his daily dose in the evening but this meant he seemed pretty miserable for part of the daySad
I've moved it to morning to see how that works. We are back at the vets on Thursday to check how he is and see if we need to change his meds, so i'll keep you postedSmile

Welcome to lab-lovers.
Sorry to hear the sad news about sandy, I have never had a dog diagnosed with cancer so don't really have any advice, but as the others have said speak to the vet about meds.
Be good to hear how he gets on Thursday.

Hi
Just thought i'd give everyone an update on Sandy. The visit to the vet was mixed - not only has my poor boy got cancer but he also has pancreatitis. Low fat diet requiredSad
Medication wise - all sorted - it doesn't matter what time of day i give it and if necessary i can increase the dose. (within reason of course!)
In himself, now the metacam is working, he is like a different dog - you wouldn't think he was ill. If i hadn't seen the scans for myself i'd think she'd got it wrong. Hope he stays like this for a long while.
Thanks to you all for your help, support and kind words xx

Glad to hear that the medication is helping him out!

I thought i would give the forum an update. Unfortunately it is a sad one. Sandy sadly lost his brave fight and on August 29th I had to make the painful decision to end his suffering. RIP my lovely boy. xxx

So sorry, to hear this, rip poor sandy. If you feel up to it you could post a tribute in rainbow bridge section.
