Hip Replacement Operation
Hello everyone first time on here.
I am looking for some help and advice. Firstly I have the most beautiful black lab ever he's 9 and just perfect in everyway, he's our pride and joy. Two weeks ago he had to have a left hip replacement operation unfortunately last weekend the new hip dislocated so back to the vets, he had an xray and is now strapped up so that he cannot bear any weight on the leg. We are having a bit of a nightmare with him he won't pee or poop in the garden and he's holding it. He is so used to going to the fields to do all he "duties". I am so worried that holdling it is going to cause problems, has anyone else had a similiar problem or can help with advice. The vet told us he will go when he's ready but it so worrying us. Any advice would be very welcome. Thank you

Hi and Welcome to Lab Lovers! Smile

In my opinion I would go along with what the vet says in that he will go when he is ready, however it will be interesting to see what other member's opinions are. How long has it been since he hasn't gone?

Hi Glenn sorry hit the button a bit too quick!
He managed a short "pee" around sixish this morning and hasn't been since, as regards the "other" not since Monday evening while still at the vets. We didn't get him home until last evening from his second visit to the vets. Trouble is this harness he is in is making it very difficult to do anything as we have to tight lead him and belly harness him everywhere he has no freedom to sniff around. Do you know anyone who's lab has had a hip replacement? Curious to meet other owners and their experiences. Thank you for your reply.

I think since Monday is a bit long, When did you last talk to the vet?
I hope everything goes ok with him Smile

Maybe just walk around with him while he's on lead? Slow pace of course.

I would definitely check-in with the vet just to see.

Good news he's "been" so relieved and I bet he is too!! I took your advice and just walked him tightly and slowly on the lead. Thank you to those who replied to me.

RE: Hip Replacement Operation
Well its been a bad weekend, my lovely boy once again dislocated the leg, the strapping sling fell off. Friday at the vets he examined him and decided that the sling wasn't going to work and he had a second op on Friday afternoon. Its been a nightmare but he's doing good. Just had a call to say he can come home but total strict rest but what worries me is how to keep him resting, he's a lively boy. Absolutely no walks apart from gardent and thats it, for how long I dont know but I would imagine a good few weeks. Feel really happy he's coming home but at the same time apprehensive so worried it will happen again. He's been through so much bless him, lets hope its third time lucky for him.

RE: Hip Replacement Operation
Can you get an exercise pen and set it up? I've had friends who use these when their dogs are on restricted activity.
