Adopting from a rescue?
My wife and I don't have $700 right now to get a Lab puppy with papers. We ended up using our income tax money on bills. So we are thinking about trying to look for a older lab from a rescue. But like I was saying we have cats and I am not sure if it would go over too well. Do you know if a animal rescue place would let us bring one of our cats to see how well our cat gets along with a potential lab?

RE: Adopting from a rescue?
I'm sure they would, and I'm sure they would help you introduce them properly, I can't remember if you said you had children or not? as this may be an issue with the rescues. I have a few ideas how to get around this but, pointless mentioning if you are childless.

RE: Adopting from a rescue?
Our dog was left behind in a closed house when the owners moved. She almost died of hunger and thirst and ate the tapestry and things and made desperate noises. My father walked by by chance and heard it. He called the police, followed them into the house and took the dog with him.
And the dog stayed with us for the following decade. Well, not directly on topic, but my point is we would always take a dog in danger or left behind than buying one from a breeder ^^ |

RE: Adopting from a rescue?
The thing that bothers me about gettinng a dog from rescue, is you never feel like the dog is yours.
in your case it's different as it wasn't done through a rescue. ![]() ![]() Labrador of the month is back |

Maybe its better if we wait then, our car will be paid off in July. That will free up $525 a month. Michigander View! A Michigan Review Blog! MichiganderBB! We eat, sleep, and breathe Michigan! |

RE: Adopting from a rescue?
If you don't have any kids you'll have no problems getting a rescue dog.
I'm not sure how rescues operate in the us, but in the uk the dogs trust here make you sign a contract saying that the dog remains their property, so there's always that feeling they could come and take them at any time. ![]() ![]() Labrador of the month is back |

RE: Adopting from a rescue?
Just thought i'd see if you are still interested in getting a lab as i could put you in touch with a breeder round your area that just had puppies 2 days ago, not sure if he has a waiting list or what he will charge but it may be worth you contacting him just to find out.

RE: Adopting from a rescue?
The small rescues are less inclined to have hard and fast rules as to where a dog can live and whilst still being careful they will take each case on its merits and try to find a suitable dog.
However money spent with a good breeder is money well spent on a puppy because they will be able to tell you how the dog will turn out as an adult. A rescue pup may well be cheaper but often nothing is known about the parents. We have had small breed pups grow into ponies, and GSD pups that only reach Spaniel size. The same goes for temperament, dont believe the stories that a pup will grow to be what you make it - 80% is in the breeding. |
